In veel landen, waaronder Ecuador, Bolivia, Oeganda en de VS worden Rechten van de Natuur - die door individuen, overheden en gemeenschappen kunnen worden afgedwongen - al in de praktijk omgezet. Ook in Nieuw-Zeeland, India, Bangladesh en Colombia zijn wetten en gevallen van 'rechtspersoonlijkheid voor de natuur' ontstaan. Is de tijd rijp om ook in België met de Rechten van de Natuur aan de slag te gaan?

Voor deze webinar hebben we drie experts uitgenodigd die elk vanuit hun perspectief en expertise dit concept zullen toelichten.

Marine Calmet komt uit Frankrijk werkt als juriste voor milieuorganisaties die betrokken zijn bij de Rechten van de Natuur. Ze is de woordvoerster van de beweging Or de question tegen de industriële mijnbouw in Frans-Guyana, en voorzitter en medeoprichtster van de ngo Wild Legal. Als jonge milieu-activiste maakt ze deel uit van de wereldwijde GARN-beweging (Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature) en faciliteert ze de Europese HUB voor de Rechten van de Natuur.

Pablo Solon is milieuactivist en ijvert voor sociale rechten. Hij was van 2009 tot juni 2011 ambassadeur van Bolivia bij de Verenigde Naties. Momenteel is hij directeur van de Solon Foundation, een partner van 11.11.11, in Bolivia en coördineert hij samen met Attac uit Frankrijk en Focus on the Global South het Systemic Alternatives Initiative. Pablo was sterk betrokken bij de TIPNIS-case die in 2017 voor het Internationale Tribunaal voor de Rechten van de Natuur werd gebracht, en waarvan de uitspraak luidde dat Bolivia de rechten van de natuur en van de inheemse volkeren als verdedigers van Moeder Aarde had geschonden.

Hendrik Schoukens is advocaat en ook werkzaam als postdoctoraal onderzoeker aan de UGent waar hij onderzoek verricht naar milieurecht in de meest ruime zin. Daarnaast is hij ook schepen voor Groen in Lennik en lid van Natuurpunt. In Belgische media duikt hij op als verdediger van de Rechten van de Natuur en raadt hij onze politici aan zich te laten inspireren door Ecuador en Nieuw-Zeeland.

For this webinar we have invited three experts who will each explain this concept from their own perspective and expertise.

Marine Calmet is from France, and works as a jurist for environmental NGOs involved in the Rights of Nature. She's the spokesperson of the movement 'Or de question' against industrial mining in French Guiana, and president and co-founder of the NGO Wild Legal. As a young Rights of Nature defender, she is part of the worldwide GARN (Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature) movement and facilitates the European HUB for the Rights of Nature.

Pablo Solon is a social and environmental activist. He was Bolivia's Ambassador to the United Nations from 2009 to June 2011. He is currently Director of the Solon Foundation in Bolivia, an 11.11.11-partner organization, and coordinates the Systemic Alternatives Initiative together with Attac of France and Focus on the Global South. Pablo was strongly involved in the TIPNIS case that was brought before the International Rights of Nature Tribunal in 2017, of which the ruling concluded that Bolivia had violated the Rights of Nature and of Indigenous peoples as defenders of Mother Earth.
