The future of our economy: a conversation between Jason Hickel and Thomas Leysen 15 mei, 2023 - 20:00

Jason Hickel is an economic anthropologist, author, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is researching inequality and ecological economics from a global perspective. In his book ‘Less is More’ (‘Minder is Meer’) — how degrowth will save the world — Hickel explains how economic growth and capitalism are unable to solve climate change and ecological collapse since they are actually causing these crises. He inspires with a clear path to a post-capitalist economy. An economy that is more just, caring and fun. An economy that allows people to flourish and reverses ecological collapse. Because by taking less, we can become more.

Hickel’s vision poses a challenge to companies in the industrial sector. How does the sector think about the transition? Does the sector see opportunities in the story of degrowth?

Thomas Leysen is Chairman of Umicore and Mediahuis. He is honorary chairman of KBC Group and the Koning Boudewijnstichting. He spent much of his career at Umicore (formerly Union Minière). He was CEO of the company until 2008, then chairman of the Board of Directors. He was also chairman of the Federation of Belgian Companies (until 2008) and of the Corporate Governance Committee (until 2023). Since 2021, he has been chairman of the Board of Directors of Royal DSM. He is a member of the Trilateral Commission, the European Round Table of Industrialists and the Steering Committee of the Bilderberg Meetings.

Thomas Leysen and Jason Hickel will discuss the future of our economy. It promises to be an interesting conversation.
