Launch of HesaMag#27: ‘Time to act on asbestos’

Asbestos has been banned in the European Union since 2005, but this carcinogen is still present in millions of buildings across Europe and it poses a major threat to the health of workers and the population at large. Lung cancer and mesothelioma caused by asbestos continue to kill around 90,000 people each year in the EU, and mortality will go on increasing for at least one or two decades.   

For the launch of the 27th issue of HesaMag, the ETUI’s health and safety magazine, we will be screening Asbestos: chronicle of an announced disaster, a documentary film by Marie-Anne Mengeot and Nina Toussaint. Through archive footage, the film chronicles a crucial period (1977-2003) of asbestos usage in Belgium and in Europe, offering both a study of industry propaganda and a memorial to the victims.

The film is in multiple languages and will be subtitled in English. You can watch a trailer here.

The screening will be followed by a discussion between Marie-Anne Mengeot and Tony Musu, ETUI occupational health & safety expert and coordinator of this issue of HesaMag.

Drinks and snacks will be served following the screening.

L’amiante est interdit dans l’Union européenne depuis 2005 mais cette substance cancérogène est encore présente dans des millions de bâtiments à travers l’Europe et elle représente toujours une menace considérable pour la santé des travailleurs et de la population. Les cancers du poumon et les mésothéliomes causés par l’amiante continuent de tuer chaque année environ 90 000 personnes dans l’UE et la mortalité continuera à augmenter pendant au moins une ou deux décennies.

Pour le lancement du 27e numéro d'HesaMag, le magazine de l'ETUI en santé et sécurité au travail, nous allons projeter Le tombeau de l'amiante: Chronique d'un désastre annoncé, un film documentaire de Marie-Anne Mengeot et Nina Toussaint. A travers des images d'archives, le film retrace une période cruciale (1977-2003) de l'utilisation de l'amiante en Belgique et en Europe, offrant à la fois une étude de la propagande de l'industrie et un mémorial aux victimes.

Le film est en plusieurs langues et sera sous-titré en anglais. Vous pouvez visionner la bande-annonce ici.

La projection sera suivie d'une discussion entre Marie-Anne Mengeot et Tony Musu, expert en santé et sécurité au travail de l'ETUI et coordinateur de ce numéro de HesaMag.

Des boissons et des en-cas seront servis à l'issue de la projection.
